RESTORING HOPE IN 40210
This photo is based off of a recent study through JCPS and Metro United Way on kindergarten readiness. What they found is that 35% of kids in this particular zip code are kindergarten ready, which means the rest of them aren’t. So, they can’t do basic things like spell their name, their last name, know their number, count up to ten without missing a number, and know basic colors and shapes and many of them have failed in those efforts. So what the Metro United Way, JCPS and the Bingham Fellows Class of 2014 said is that we are going to try to empower parents and if we can empower our parents then we can get them to encourage the kids to read. This picture is a neighborhood front yard library in front of our church that is stocked with books and the child can take a book out and put a book in, go home and read the book, and parents help them. It is one of our most visited sites at the church. At church, we have the child development center and kids and parents can take those books there and this picture gives us hope because we can help to bridge this gap. The goal is to see a 5% increase in kindergarten readiness scores within 40210, but we hope to see more than a 5% increase as a result of this initiative.
