CARING THROUGH SELF-SACRIFICING
This photo is from a church youth activity called F.I.R.E. (Forthright in Reaching Everyone). The young men sitting in this picture have given their lives to Christ, they are young adults, they are Christian rappers, poets, Spoken Word speakers, and they go into different youth activities sharing their testimonies; rapping and sharing their music. They create an atmosphere for the youth to be comfortable and to express themselves. The youth are all different ages and what they do here is share their testimony, which encourages other youth to feel free in a spiritual setting. Most of the times, we bring the youth in our own organized, ritual manner, whereas on this night while they are in the sanctuary, we encourage them to be themselves. So, they can, talk, jump around, sing, and dance—it’s an Open Mic night. They can be themselves and it allows them to express themselves without judgment. This photo represents hope because these men have great testimonies (e.g. from the streets, in gangs) and at some point in their lives, someone poured into them and would not let them go. These men have self-sacrificed their own agenda to give back to the youth. The youth look up to these young adults and imitate what they do and listen. We need to empower the youth spiritually leading them to make right choices. This photo represents the self-sacrifice of the individuals who understands that relationships impact and empower the youth (at an early age).
