REINCARNATION

This is a fabulous unicorn made out of old metal. Someone just took old, worn out parts, and turned it into this beautiful piece of art. There’s an art gallery in Portland. I don’t think a lot of people know that, it’s Tim Faulkner’s and it’s amazing. This piece sits in the back parking lot. The artwork there is wonderful… There’s a little coffee shop, and they have books, and it’s just a great place. Anyways, this is in the back parking lot, and someone completely transformed old parts… I just thought that this unicorn was wonderful when I saw it. I thought, “Oh, wow!” It’s just something different. You don’t see that every day. I think a lot of people, when they think of the West End in particular, they don’t think about … This type of stuff. Beauty isn’t the first thing they think of. It’s nice to see positive things, and really beautiful things in a place where people don’t think there is. It’s a new life for these scrap metal pieces and now it’s something beautiful. By someone collecting it and using their imagination they created beauty. As you drive through the West End, you have boarded up homes, and this. People see the boarded up homes, but they don’t see the beautiful house with the manicured yard, and someone trying to make their house lovely. They just see the one that has the boards on the window. People have a tendency to overlook the beauty of this side of town, and its here, they just don’t choose to see it, if that makes sense. You can take something like scrap metal and make it beautiful, which means if your life looks really, really bad one day, tomorrow it can be something beautiful.
